Since 1997, Azorean Maritime Heritage Society (AMHS) has promoted Azorean culture and shared whaling heritage by raising awareness and pride within New England's Azorean American community.
Azorean Maritime Heritage Society (AMHS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting Portuguese culture, shared maritime history, and unique boating opportunities for all ages. Our all-volunteer organization participates in many local cultural events, teaches rowing, sailing and maintenance of wooden Azorean whaleboats, hosts a popular annual wine and food tasting, and provides scholarships for college-bound youth. We co-host the only International Azorean Whaleboat Regatta, held every two years, which alternates between the Azores and New Bedford.
AMHS maintains three authentic Azorean whaleboats — Pico, Faial, and Bela Vista — which were built in the post-whaling era using traditional techniques. They are used for cultural, historical, and recreational events. Currently, there are only 63 Azorean whaleboats in the world; these are the only three in the United States.
When you join AMHS, you can have the unique opportunity to sail and row these beautiful whaleboats with others in New Bedford during our regular summer boating schedule.
