AZOREAN MARITIME HERITAGE SOCIETY

HONORING TRADITION AND CRAFTING THE FUTURE:

LAUNCH THE SAO JORGE

Nearing 30 years old, the boats require regular maintenance and refurbishment to keep them at regatta-level readiness. Rowing and sailing teams from AMHS compete against Azorean teams from Pico and Faial in an international Azorean whaleboat regatta every other year. The location of the regatta rotates between New Bedford and the Azores. Team USA (the AMHS team) just competed in the 13th International Regatta on the island of Faial. New Bedford is scheduled to host the next International Regatta in 2027.

Our oldest boat, the Bela Vista, is approaching the end of her useful life. After many renovations, it is time for her to retire from sailing. We are eager to construct a new yet authentic Azorean whaleboat to replace the Bela Vista and enable us to continue our mission of keeping Azorean culture and shared maritime traditions alive here in the United States.

Your assistance is needed to help us meet our mission.

Our all-volunteer organization teaches rowing, sailing and maintenance of wooden Azorean whaleboats, participates in many local cultural events, and provides scholarships for college-bound youth. We co-host the onlyInternational Azorean Whaleboat Regatta, held every two years, which alternates between the Azores and New Bedford.

Please help us reach our funding goal of
$175,000.
